MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FLOWER AND GARDEN SHOW 2023
MAJOR FLORAL DESIGN COMPETITION
Welcome to Flowers by Nici. My business has been running for 20 years and has grown way beyond my expectations. The business is a collaboration of all the best things in life, glorious blooms, statement designs and polished styling, in order to create THAT celebration, THIS occasion and THE day. I am devoted to creating JOY through florals and styling, tailored to each client's wishes with my signature flair.
This year’s piece at the Melbourne International Flowers and Garden Major Competition is called "Beneath the Trees" - a showcase of my life in the country, where I live and work, along with my 10th anniversary at the show.
I have created tree branches from an old clothes line, yes a “Hills Hoist”, covered with paperback from a tree in my back yard, for texture and technique as part of judging criteria.
Growing through the branches you will see cascading, wildflower arrangements in a “Tequila Sunrise” colour palette. Inspired by my many early morning starts and watching the sunrise over the hills. Some of my material was given to me from clients, friends and community members, to help bring my home to you. (David Austin Roses, Nandina, Leucadendrons, Rose Hip, Alliums and proteas to name just a few)
To fill the massive negative space under the trees I have used my Ikebana training to inspire this part of the design. Using old wine barrel rings to create a Japanese style paving look along with sculptural balls. Looking at the design I am reminded of my mum's garden and sitting under her trees and her rusty barbwire balls – I guess this is a wonderful reflection of my friendship and love of my mum – For those who don’t know she is my right arm.
So yes I've taken a very personal journey to create this year’s design to showcase who I am, where I live and my love of being a country floral designer and my 10th anniversary at the show.
